Seeley Lake is a drive-to destination. The town sits on Montana Highway 83 about 52 road miles from Missoula,1 If you fly, Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) is the closest airport; Glacier Park International (FCA) near Kalispell is the other option to the north. Once you are here, nearly everything (lakes, trailheads, campgrounds) is reached off the same highway.
Drive distances and times
| From | Road miles | Typical drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Missoula | About 51 to 52 | About 1 hour12 |
| Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) | About 58 | About 70 minutes3 |
| Condon (Swan Valley) | About 29 | About 35 minutes8 |
| Kalispell | About 93 | About 1 hour 48 minutes4 |
| Helena | About 100 | About 1 hour 54 minutes6 |
| Glacier Park International (FCA) | About 101 | About 2 hours5 |
| Great Falls | About 142 | About 2 hours 41 minutes7 |
These times and distances are modeled with OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM) from the town’s mapped coordinates, not official mileages, and they assume clear roads and free-flowing traffic. Wikipedia gives the Missoula distance as 52 miles; the routing model gives about 51.12 Allow more time in winter, at night and behind summer traffic.
The routes
Highway 83 is the valley’s spine. Sometimes called the Seeley-Swan or “Glacier Parkway,” it runs through town, south 14 miles to its junction with Highway 200 and north 74 miles to Bigfork.1
From Missoula and MSO, take Highway 200 to the Highway 83 junction, then drive 14 miles north into town, about 52 miles in all.1
From Kalispell, FCA and the Flathead, Highway 83 connects Bigfork to Seeley Lake through the Swan Valley, passing Condon about 29 road miles north of town.18
From Helena and Great Falls, plan on roughly two and a bit under three hours respectively by modeled routing.67 Check a current map for the best way given road conditions.
Getting around the valley
Once you are in town, distances are short but spread out along the highway, and we found no verified local transit, so plan on driving between stops. A few reference points:
- Big Larch Campground (boat launch, dock, roped swimming beach) is on the east shore of Seeley Lake about a mile north of town.14
- Clearwater Canoe Trail launch: drive 3.7 miles north on Highway 83, then 0.7 mile west on Forest Road 17597. The take-out is behind the Seeley Lake Ranger Station, and a walking trail links the two, so you do not need a shuttle. Each lot holds about six vehicles.15
- Condon and the Swan Valley are about 29 road miles north.8
Trailheads east of town are reached by gravel forest roads off Morrell Creek Road; directions are on each trail page. Forest road conditions change, so check with the ranger district before a long drive on gravel.13
Which airport should I fly into?
Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) is closest, about 58 road miles and 70 minutes away by modeled routing.3 It is the natural choice for most trips.
Glacier Park International (FCA) near Kalispell is about 101 miles and two hours away.5 It can make sense if you are combining Seeley Lake with the Swan Valley or the Flathead.
Compare fares and rental car availability at both; we do not track airline schedules.
Is there public transportation?
We did not find a verified public bus, train or shuttle route serving Seeley Lake, so plan on a car. If that matters for your trip, ask the Seeley Lake Area Chamber of Commerce (406-677-2990) about current options.12
Winter driving
Seeley Lake averages about 119 inches of snow a year, most of it from November through March.10 Most trips here use Highway 83 and Highway 200, so check conditions before you leave:
- Montana 511 (or dial 511) shows road conditions, plow locations and traveler cameras statewide.9 We found no official Seeley Lake webcam; the 511 cameras are the verified option.
- Forest roads to trailheads may be snowbound well into spring. Check Lolo National Forest alerts and closures or call the Seeley Lake Ranger District at 406-677-2233.13
- Give yourself daylight, extra time and a winter kit (warm layers, water, a shovel). See weather and climate for monthly temperatures.
Bringing a boat
Montana requires watercraft to be inspected for aquatic invasive species, and nonresidents need a Vessel AIS Prevention Pass. Check FWP’s current rules and inspection station locations before you tow in.11 Our lakes hub lists boat launches.
When you arrive
Two stops answer most questions:
- Seeley Lake Ranger Station, 3583 Highway 83 North, 406-677-2233, open weekdays 8:00 to 4:30 and closed federal holidays (as of 2026). It covers trails, campgrounds, permits and closures on the national forest.13
